Auditions
All players need to audition for Dr. Foy, conductor. Auditions consist of:
- Solo or orchestral excerpts of your choice – generally about 3-5 minutes of music. Solos could be pieces studied in private lessons, an all-state solo, or standard repertoire for your instrument. The piece or excerpt should show your playing at its best. No accompaniment is needed.
- Scales – three scales of your choice, three octaves if possible.
- Sight-reading may be requested.
Auditions for string players are primarily to determine if players can handle our orchestra repertoire well and as a factor in seating. Wind and brass positions are competitive.
Auditions are by appointment. Contact Dr. Foy at rfoy@ncsu.edu. Make sure to state what instrument you play.
Auditions in August are during the first week of classes (watch for an announcement). Other times during the year are by individual appointment.
Course Credit
Both orchestras are credit courses (1-hr) (MUS 121-122) and course registration is required for undergraduate students. Students may not register themselves. Students must audition first, and then the instructor will register those accepted.
